THE MAEROWITZ COLLECTION

Saturday, June 29, 2019

9:00AM – 1:00PM

The Maerowitz collection is one of the largest assortments of rare companion trees as well as Ceratozamia in Southern California.  This collection is special in many ways.  First, it has been grown for about 30 years.  Second, there is a huge quantity of plant material.  Third, the variety of material is comparable to what you would expect to see in a botanic garden.  Fourth there are some very rare species that you may never have seen before.  On top of that the size of the rare material is inspiring.  Some are larger than are available elsewhere in cultivation.  This collection includes palms, cycads, succulents, bamboo, and exotic trees.  There is also a very significant library of reference books related to tropical plants grown around the world available for sale at very reasonable prices.

  • At the last sale, most trees were dormant.  Now they are leafing and flowering and displaying their full character.  Some of the tree species are difficult or impossible to find elsewhere.
  • DeepRoot Barrier WB30/60-300.  Roll dimensions are 1.5mm x 30” x 300’.  This 1.5mm thick material is the thickest available in a 300’roll.  Stop tree or bamboo roots from invading neighboring planting beds, your neighbor’s property, or lifting and breaking your hardscape.  This is the strongest flexible root barrier made.  One roll weighs hundreds of pounds.  Rolls are new and never used.  The price of $300 each is a fraction of retail cost of this commercial landscape material.  See https://www.deeproot.com/products/geomembrane/water-barrier.html for more information.
  • Some of the monster cycad clusters were recently divided-up to make purchase prices more affordable.  For example Dioon “bacanora” divisions are available from 3” to 8”.  Dioon caputoi 2” to 9”, Ceratozamia zaragozae from 1” to 5”.
  • For this sale all plant prices have been reduced 5%-50%, and the price lists below represent these discounts.
  • Plants are both in the ground and in pots.  Many of the large trees are easily accessible with a crane.  Digging dates requiring heavy equipment (crane, backhoe, etc.) will need to be arranged with the owner.
  • Professional hand diggers will be on hand to quote digging costs for buyers.
  • Identification of plants is made to the best of our ability.  Sizes and quantities are approximate, but also given to the best of our ability.  Photos are a representative portion of the collection.
  • Please RSVP for the address (even if you already know it).  The address will be emailed on the Friday before the sale, Friday, June 28, to those who RSVP.
  • We accept cash, money order, cashier’s check, or pre-approved check.  7.75% sales tax will be applied according to California law, unless a California resale permit is provided.
  • Please wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain is very rough and uneven.  A walking stick would be helpful, but is optional.
  • Please no early birds.  Gates will open at 9:00AM.
